Art and Travel Writing

This year I am teaching sketching and taking groups out walking to sketch in the northern beaches in Sydney. In addition I am planning walking and art tours in England, France, Switzerland and Italy along the Via Francigena pilgrim route. The sublime scenery, castles and cathedrals, and vineyards provide heaps of subject matter for photography and sketching. For details of the tours go to Via Francigena Tours.

My focus this year continues to be the Via Francigena pilgrim route. So, this means travelling in Italy, Switzerland and France to gather visual and research information for various types of writing. And of course, lots of photography, painting and drawing. Visiting Switzerland has renewed my interest in the ‘sublime’!  So, I am following in the footsteps of Turner and enjoying painting and drawing the Swiss Alps.

Photography and Writing

My interest this year shifted to the Via Francigena, an ancient medieval pilgrim route from Canterbury to Rome, filled with amazing art and architecture! The result is a body of photographic work and published articles about the Via Francigena.

Photography and Writing

My fascination for the year 1788 in early Australian colonial history aroused my curiosity about what was happening in the rest of the world in 1788. As a result, I became very absorbed with feminist issues, especially the difficulties endured by royal women. So, after much research and travel I began my ‘in search of’ series of blog stories.

In particular, I focused on three Royal Princesses who spent much of their lives imprisoned. I wanted to tell their stories by examining their portraiture and photographing where they lived. Here is a link to the story of Sophia Dorothea, wife of Hanoverian King George I of England, and the lovely Ducal Palace in Celle where she lived as a child.
