Art Classes

Carol’s cottage Art Classes are underway for 2021! This year, we have some exciting new art courses and workshops.

We are offering regular classes following the school terms and attended on a weekly basis. These classes are designed to build drawing and colour mixing skills. For drawing we are offering beginners and intermediate level classes. In addition, we are introducing watercolours for beginners. Both of these classes are designed to build the skills needed for oil painting, sketch walks and plein air drawing and painting.

In addition to regular classes we are offering day long workshops at times to be arranged. Day long workshops make it possible to work more intensively on subject matter. This is applicable for portraiture and figurative work, sketch walks or plein air oil painting.

Plus, we will continue to offer seasonal crafts designed to make our homes beautiful for special occasions like Christmas, Easter or Australia Day!

Workshops

Seasonal

Our first seasonal workshop for 2021 is our Australia Day table centre piece. The workshop will take place on Saturday 23rd January from 3:00 to 4:30 pm. The cost is $55 including refreshments. So don’t miss out! Join us to create your own unique table centre piece complete with Australian flora and fauna!

Classes

In 2021 we will be offering both Beginner and Intermediate level classes. Beginner classes are designed as an introduction to drawing materials, techniques and composition. In intermediate classes these drawing skills are applied to both watercolour and oil painting.

Watercolour Landscapes

Carol’s Cottage ‘Watercolour Landscapes’ are classes designed for watercolour beginners. However, ‘Introductory Drawing’ is an advisable pre-requisite. The aim is to explore a variety of different ways to represent the landscape using colour. We begin with the three primaries and how they mix to produce secondary colours.  Then, we use a variety of techniques to produce interesting landscape effects. The ultimate goal of this course is to equip you with the skills needed for sketch walks. So, there will be opportunities for sketching along local walking trails!

So, here is an outline of the plans for each week in 2021:

  1. Experimenting with warm and cool colours using the primaries red, yellow and blue. Techniques include graduated washes, wet in wet, dropping in colour and textured effects for painting rocks and seascapes.
  2. Variegated washes, glazing and shadows in gardens.
  3. Preserving white in watercolour using masking fluid, or scratching techniques with a focus on foreground.
  4. Mixing greens for the variety of greens in vegetation.
  5. Wax resist, masking take and overlaid washes for painting forests.
  6. Wax resist and scratching for painting streams and waterfalls.
  7. Brushmarks and hard and soft edges when painting gardens.
  8. Brushmarks and hard and soft edges for painting pathways.
